Couched Constructions: New Design Ideas

In our January 17 conversation, Charmalee and I compared Kate’s and my observations of Couch #1 (a leather 3-seat couch) with Couch #2 (a fabric 3-seat sleeper sofa). Since the second couch has less structural material inside, we discussed ways for using the metal fold-out frame in conjunction with the first couch. The pieces of Couch #2 will likely play a more supporting role in the construction.

Charmalee proposed her ideas for the project with an emphasis on mobility and adaptability for day to night transitions. She also focused on ability of one person to move and operate it. By using the sturdy base from Couch #1 and attaching the back pieces from Couch #1 and #2 with hinged connections to either side, a triangular sleeping space is created. Feet will elevate it slightly above the ground level for weather reasons. When not in use, the sides are folded down flat, and wheels at one end make the unit easy to relocate. It could also be stacked with other similar units for storage.

Shown below are Charmalee’s proposal sketches and my chart comparing the materials in two couches.
