Couched Constructions: Design Ideas

After another meeting, we have new observations for the Couched Constructions installation. This week we worked on design concepts and proposals for using the couch units and scrap pieces in a way usable to homeless populations. Kate and I took different design approaches, making for a good discussion, comparing and contrasting. She explored the idea of using multiple couches and repetition of the different units. I started with the idea of one couch with the potential of adding components should another couch be available to the user.

My proposal involves re-using the base unit for sitting and sleeping, inverting the back piece for structure/insulation/storage, and adding the extra wood pieces and leather as a retractable cover.

This design investigates the following:

  • Functional for one person
  • Potential mobility to new locations
  • Unit can be increased with new modules
  • Adjustable to time of day (for sleeping, sitting, or storage)
  • Shield from rain/wind

Deconstruction/assembly could be joined with a shelter program to address the need for access to tools, extra fasteners, instructions, etc.

Seeing positive and feasible elements in both designs, we have decided to continue developing each idea individually, and also exploring the potentials of combining them into a 3rd design. This week we will be continuing our individual ideas and couch hunting for our next piece to deconstruct and re-design.
