THE DUMP : La Chureca, Nicaragua

People wake up in the smog of distinct smell of gases from the dump. They are not bothered by the distinct smell. They were born in the dump, they lived their whole life in the dump and they have no perception of what’s out side the dump.

Le Chureca, Nicaragua the dump: day starts with the arrival of the garbage. Picking garbage to uncover any items that could be sold to the close by shops is their focus. They have no perception of saving for a better tomorrow. Their shelters are merely assembled with any reclaimed, left over materials they can find in the garbage with the little passed down knowledge they have about construction.

People in the dump have a zero carbon foot print. One would feel they are more eco friendly than most of us. They reclaim, recycle and reuse materials. Their shelters made out of 100% post consumer materials. All the materials are within few miles. They do not use excessive energy, but encourage natural light and ventilation.

How can we as designers/builders outreach to people like this? Do we have the capacity to reach out to them? Can we get inspired by their attempts of intuitive building structures with limited resources?
